Here are some highlights for the new semester.

New Power of YOU Drop-In:Center: You can connect with advisors and other POY students, get answers to quick questions, study, eat lunch or hang out. POY advisors will be in the Power of YOU Drop-In Center, room T2390, on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11am - 1pm and Wednesdays 2pm - 4pm. 

Parent Support Network is a new resource for student parents. We want to support you in being a good student and a good parent. The Network will provide students with:

  • Peer to peer encouragement and support
  • Information on successful parenting tools and resources
  • Individual "coaching" to help balance family, work and school life
  • Resource referrals for childcare, housing, mental health and other concerns.

Visits to area colleges will be planned for fall semester for students who are looking to transfer to a four-year institution.  Information is posted on the Campus website.

ADVISING

All POY students are expected to meet with a POY advisor three times each semester.

First Visit: September. Check-in on courses, discuss civic engagement expectation, and get questions answered.

Second Visit: October. Turn in and discuss with advisor the POY instructor feedback forms (which will be send by email and posted on D2L)

Third Visit: November. Select courses for spring semester.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

POY students are expected to complete 20 hours each semester. Students can meet this expectation through courses, volunteering in the community and participating in MCTC student clubs and activities.

  • Be a panelist for Minneapolis Public Schools/MCTC Senior Connect Days
  • Participate in the POY Leadership Academy
  • Present to the community who funds the POY program
  • Volunteer in the community with POY.

New Civic Engagement Course:Political Science 1111, Reclaiming Democracy. This one-credit Introduction to Civic Engagement class has been designed with POY student in mind and satisfies your civic engagement expectation.

POY Leadership Academy provides you with an opportunity to develop, strengthen and put into practice leadership and mentoring skills. It's a great way to connect with other POY students and resources in the community as well as gain valuable support and experience for your resume. All POY students are eligible to apply, with preference given to students who have not participated in the academy previously. Applications will be available at the end of fall semester. Student Life Clubs and Organizations A variety of student life groups are active on campus, including SCOPE, The Party and Three Legged Frog. To learn more, email Tara.Martinez@minneapolis.edu or call 612-659-6761. 

POY Club The success of the Leadership Academy has inspired students to form the POY Club. Caleb Hawkinson and Maria Andrade are the main organizers. If you are interested in joining or would like more information, please feel free to contact them via D2L.

SPECIAL POY INITIATIVES

Short Term Book & Transportation Loans Please see a POY advisor regarding assistance to help purchase textbooks and the To-Go card. Th loan amount will be dependent on the cost of the books from the MCTC bookstore.

Students receiving an emergency book loan from the POY program are expected to pay this money back to Business Services by October 31, 2009. Late fees will apply if you do not pay by the deadline. A hold will be placed on your MCTC account, which will deny you access to checking out library materials and registering for spring semester courses until the load is paid.

Edina Realty Housing Fund POY students in need of housing can apply to the POY program to be considered for funds to supplement costs associated with living that will allow students to continue their academic careers at MCTC.

Specific criteria to qualify include:

1) Demonstrate in writing need for housing resources

2) Maintain a 2.5 GPA

3) Attend a funders' breakfast on October 30.

MARCH 2008: POWER OF YOU GOES TO THE CAPITOL

On March 27, more than 100 Power of YOU students from MCTC and St. Paul College attended a funding hearing for the Power of YOU program at the State Capitol. MCTC President Phil Davis and MCTC Power of YOU student Jasmine McConnell were two of the people who testified.
